How to Choose the Best Sourcing Agent in China
If you want to buy from China, the hardest part is not finding a product. The hard part is finding a reliable China sourcing agent who will not waste your money. Search for one and you will see hundreds of names, and almost all of them say they are the best.
We are a China sourcing company ourselves, so we are not neutral. But we know how this business works from the inside. In this guide we tell you plainly how to pick a trusted China sourcing agent, with us or with anyone else.
What is a sourcing agent?
A sourcing agent is a person or company that helps you buy products from China. You tell the agent what you want. The agent finds suppliers, asks for prices, checks the factory and the goods, and helps you get the order shipped.
You will also see other names for the same job: China buying agent, China purchasing agent, Chinese sourcing agent, China procurement agent, or China import agent. A good sourcing agent in China is like your own person on the ground. They speak the language, know the markets, and can walk into a factory when you cannot.
A China sourcing agency can help with many things:
- Finding products and suppliers. Even when you do not know the factory name.
- Negotiating the price. In China, the first price is rarely the best price.
- Protecting you from scams. Checking that the supplier is real before you pay.
- Quality and quantity checks. Making sure you get what you ordered, in the amount you ordered.
- Contracts and shipping. Clear paperwork and goods that actually leave China.
Three kinds of agent from China
Not every agent from China does the same work. Most fall into three groups.
1. The link forwarder
This agent finds a supplier on Alibaba or another website and sends you the link. That is all. You can do this yourself in ten minutes, so do not pay much for it.
2. The middleman who resells
This agent buys from the factory and sells to you at a higher price, and you never see the real factory price. Some are honest. But the agent earns more when you pay more, so their advice may not be in your favour.
3. The real partner on the ground
This agent works for you only. They visit suppliers, check the goods with their own eyes, tell you the truth even when it is bad news, and charge a clear fee. This is the one you want when the order matters.
Questions to ask before you hire a China sourcing agent
Before you pay anyone, ask these seven questions. A trusted China sourcing service will answer them clearly and without getting upset.
- Where are you really based? Ask for a company name, a city and a real phone number. A sourcing agent in China should be in China.
- Do you take commission from factories? If yes, ask how they stay on your side.
- Will you visit the factory? For big orders, a good agent goes there in person.
- Who signs the contract? You should know exactly who is responsible if something goes wrong.
- How do you check quality and quantity? Ask who does it, when, and what you get to see afterwards, such as photos and video.
- How do you charge? A clear fee is good. A vague answer is a warning.
- Have you done real orders like mine? Ask for examples of products and countries.
Red flags of a fake agent
Many scams in China sourcing follow the same pattern. Be careful if you see any of these:
- They ask you to send money to a personal account.
- They refuse to show you the supplier or the factory.
- The price is far lower than everyone else, with no reason.
- They push you to pay fast, with a story about a limited offer.
- They will not give photos or video of your goods before payment.
- They only talk on chat and never agree to a call.
Why choose FriendFirm
Many agents only forward links. We do the work properly:
- We have a warehouse in China. Your goods are handled by our own team, not left with a stranger.
- We do the quality inspection ourselves. We check the goods and the amounts, and send you photos and video.
- We are not just an Alibaba link. We find, check and negotiate with suppliers the proper way, not just copy a link from a website.
- For big orders, we come to the supplier. Wherever your supplier is in China, we go there. Travel costs plus our fee are quoted before we go.
- No commission from factories. We work for you only.
- A clear contract with the supplier. So you know who is responsible.
Common questions
How much does a China sourcing agent cost?
It depends on the agent. Some charge a percentage of the order, some charge a fixed fee, and some earn from the factory instead. Always ask for the price in writing before you start. At FriendFirm we quote our fee first, so you know it before you decide.
Can I just use Alibaba myself?
Yes, and many people do. But Alibaba is a marketplace. It does not inspect your goods in person, and it cannot tell you if a seller is a trader pretending to be a factory. An agent is worth it when the order is big, new to you, or risky.
What products can a sourcing agent find?
Almost anything made in China, from electronics, clothing and bags to auto parts and machines. We have handled orders such as fuel injectors and clothing for Thailand.
